Before your appointment
What does a Commissioner for Oaths do in Alberta?
A Commissioner for Oaths can administer oaths and take or receive affidavits, affirmations and declarations in and for Alberta. The Commissioner verifies the required process and witnesses the person making the oath, affirmation or declaration.
What should I bring?
Bring valid government-issued photo identification and the complete document you need commissioned, including all pages and any exhibits or attachments. If another person must sign or act as a separate witness, confirm those requirements before your appointment.
Should I sign my document before arriving?
If your signature must be witnessed as part of the commissioning process, do not sign beforehand. Complete the document as much as possible, but wait to sign until instructed during your appointment.
Are you a Notary Public?
No. Guardian Identity Services currently provides Commissioner for Oaths services. A Commissioner for Oaths cannot act as a Notary Public solely because of that appointment. We do not provide legal advice or certify true copies.
Can you commission every document?
No. The document must fall within the authority of an Alberta Commissioner for Oaths and may have its own signing, witnessing, jurisdiction or recipient requirements. We may decline documents that are incomplete, misleading, fraudulent, outside our authority, or that require a Notary Public or lawyer.
Can you commission court documents?
Many affidavits and affidavits of service used in Alberta court processes can be sworn or affirmed before a Commissioner for Oaths. You are responsible for ensuring you have the correct and complete form and for following the filing body's requirements.
What if my document has exhibits or attachments?
Bring the complete affidavit or declaration together with every exhibit or attachment. Exhibit requirements vary, so additional time and fees may apply.
Do you prepare documents or give legal advice?
No. We provide commissioning services only. We do not draft legal documents, choose forms for you, interpret legal rights, or provide legal advice.
Do you offer mobile appointments?
Yes. Mobile appointments are available in Edmonton, with surrounding-area appointments subject to availability and travel pricing. The mobile travel/service fee is additional to document commissioning fees.
Do I need an appointment?
Appointments are recommended so we can reserve enough time for your documents. Online booking is available for in-person and mobile service options.
